  • Development of B70HEV and B50PHEV based on Faw-TMH powertrain

      With the targets of low carbon emissions and optimization of energy consumption, FAW developed the Twin Motor Hybrid system (FAW-TMH™), which has obtained patents in both China and the United States. The system includes the hybrid dedicated engine, a traction motor (TM), a clutch, an automatic manual transmission (AMT), a BSG, a new battery system and other key assemblies. This hybrid powertrain can be extended to plug-in system easily. This configuration has all the full hybrid functions such as Start-Stop, pure electric driving and regenerative brake. As the application of this system, FAW has developed B70HEV and B50PHEV. In NEDC, B70HEV can achieve a reduction of 35.2 % in fuel consumption, which can meet the European "130 g CO 2/km" emissions regulations in 2012. B50PHEV can achieve a reduction of more than 60 % in fuel consumption in NEDC.

  • Numerical simulations of natural gas injection pressure effects on a direct injected, pilot ignited, natural gas engine

      Pilot-ignited direct injection of natural gas fueling of a compression ignition engine has been shown to keep high thermal efficiency as diesel engines. To further investigate the combustion process, the effect of natural gas injection pressure on combustion in a diesel engine fueled with pilot-ignited directly-injected natural gas was studied by multidimensional simulations while engine speed and other injection parameters were held constant. NO emissions are increased by higher gas injection pressure without significantly affecting cylinder pressure. By increasing gas injection pressure, HC emissions are reduced with the increase of cylinder temperature. The data got contributes to the development of the pilot-ignited high pressure direct injection natural gas engine.

  • Study on improving the efficiency of supercharging lean burn LPG engine by optimizing compression ratio and distribution phase

      In this paper, the engine optimal matching is done to improve the efficiency of supercharging lean burn LPG engines by optimizing the compression ratio and the distribution phase of camshaft. The gas consumption and emissions of LPG engine are reduced. A whole engine model is set up on one-dimensional simulation software. The optimal compression ratio is determined by comparing the simulation computed results and bench experimental results under different compression ratios. The exhaust advance angle and valve overlap angle are optmized on the basis of successive optimization method and demonstrated in experiments.

  • Effects of ambient temperature on firing behavior and unregulated emissions of spark-ignition methanol and liquefied petroleum gas/methanol engines during cold start

      The effects of the ambient temperature on the firing behavior and the unregulated emissions (formaldehyde and unburned methanol emissions) of electronically controlled inlet port injection spark-ignition methanol and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)/methanol engines during the cold start were investigated experimentally by means of a single-cycle fuel injection strategy. The test results indicated that the minimum amount of methanol injected per cycle to ensure the methanol engine reliable firing increases 86% with the reduction of the ambient temperature from 301 to 289 K. With the ambient temperature below 289 K, the methanol engine cannot be started reliably without the other assistant measures even with a large methanol injection. The LPG only played a part of start-aids in the LPG/methanol engine. Using additional LPG injected into the inlet port results in a reliable firing of the LPG/methanol engine at low ambient temperature during cold start. When the ambient temperature drops, the mass ratio of injected LPG/methanol for the reliable firing of the LPG/methanol engine during cold start increases rapidly. The maximum combustion pressure in the cylinder, the maximum instantaneous engine speed, and the formaldehyde emissions increase significantly and the unburned methanol decreases obviously with the rise of the ambient temperature.

  • Structural lightweight design of engine connecting rod

      The connecting rod is one of the key components of an automotive engine; it works under dynamic loads with complex uncertainties. The reliability of a connecting rod is critical for an engine design. For traditional deterministic numerical simulations of connecting rods, which neglect some uncertain factors, the reliability is guaranteed by introducing overly conservative safety factors, and it normally results in a safe but over weighted and suboptimal design. In this paper a framework for the sensitivity analysis and reliability based design optimization of a connecting rod is proposed. The most advanced reliability based design optimization and simulation software integration methods will be employed in this research; it seamlessly integrates a sensitivity and reliability analysis driver, a parameter driven CAD tool, and an advanced nonlinear structural analysis CAE software package. The entire process will be conducted automatically by command scripts. Using the proposed reliability based analysis framework the weight of the connecting rod is reduced by 3.7% without compromising reliability.

  • A research on the genetic-fuzzy control strategy for parallel hybrid electric vehicle

      A fuzzy control strategy is developed for a parallel hybrid electric vehicle with dual-clutch and single-axis torque coupling. Then the genetic algorithm (GA) is adopted to optimize the fuzzy control strategy for torque distribution. Specifically, a simulation model is built with Matlab/Simulink and ADVISOR based on test data, and the optimizations on control strategy with both single objective of fuel economy and multi-objectives of fuel economy and emission performance are conducted under NEDC driving cycle. The results show that after multi-objective optimization on fuzzy control strategy using GA, fuel consumption reduces by 3.65% with exhaust emission also decreasing apparently.

  • Obstacle detection based on 3D laser scanner and range image for intelligent vehicle

      An obstacle detection method based on 3D laser scanner and range image is proposed for intelligent vehicle. First, the range image of one scan is established based on the Welodyne HDL-32E laser scanner data. Then, according to the range image analysis, the point cloud in one row of the image is classified into several groups. Finally, the point clouds in different groups are detected by a linear model in column. Simulation reveals that using the proposed method, the rate of false detection caused by the obstacle lock is reduced, and this method well adapts to the terrain change.

  • Forecast of the thermal insulated property for 6110A diesel engine

      In this paper a mathematic model and a compute program are compiled that can be used to caluclate the thermodynamic process, heat transfer of the cylinder periphery and exhaust duct of the cylinder head for a direct injection diesel engines. By using an analytical method to calculate the heat transfer of the cylinder periphery, especially by using a two-dimensional model to calculate the heat transfer of the piston crown, the model is solved by combining it with the calculation of the thermodynamic process. By means of each using the other for its boundary conditions, the thermodynamic process of the adiabatic diesel engine can be simulated. With several different arrangements of adiabatic profiles for the instance, the model 6110A diesel engine is cited, and simulation for the naturally aspirated diesel, turbocharging diesel and the turbocompound engine at a rated routine is carried out. The adabatic effect on enginee performance, combustion process an heat balance is analyzed. Data of the forecast are presented for the development of the adiabatic diesel engines.

  • Powertrain control and system integration technology from OEM'S perspective

      Powertrain control is significant for commercial vehicles to meet the requirements of energy-saving and emission regulations; also it is critical to improve the power performance of vehicles. Under the pressure of cost, the diversities of user-requirement, frequently changing market, FAW makes a deep study of powertrain control, while some non OEM-specific functions, for example some components in basic software, are developed by suppliers and integrated by FAW. The product development platform for powertrain is built following this way, based on which some OEM-specific features can be implemented rapidly and efficiently. These features will make the products more competitive in the market. This paper gives an overview to the powertrain control development situation of FAW, including the system integration strategy and the coordination control between the networked ECUs on vehicle.
